What should I do if my dishwasher doesn’t work?

Make sure it’s plugged in! Check the power in the outlet by plugging something else in, or by testing with a voltmeter. Check your fuse box or circuit breaker panel to make sure you have power to the outlet.

  1. Is there a problem with the door switch?
Your dishwasher won’t run if the door is open or ajar. The door switch helps seal the dishwasher so it doesn’t throw water around your kitchen with its running. If the switch is broken, it can be easily replaced with parts that are readily available.
  2. Could a thermal fuse cause a problem?
Your dishwasher is protected from overheating by a thermal fuse. If it blows, replace the thermal fuse. It’s usually located in the control panel or mounted to the bottom of the tank.
  3. Is there a problem with the door latch assembly?
Your dishwasher won’t start if the door latch assembly is defective. Replacing the door latch is an easy repair and the parts are readily available.
  4. What if there is a problem with the control board?
The dishwasher is powered by the main control board. Look for other solutions to your dishwasher’s problems first, the control board is expensive and you almost always can find another source of the problem.

Why won’t my dishwasher drain?

  1. Is there a problem with the drain pump?
If the dishwasher doesn’t drain, the drain pump could be at fault. If it’s defective, you’ll need a new one.
  2. Could the problem be the drain impeller?
The drain impeller pushes the water out of the dishwasher and into your drain line. The drain impeller might be broken or worn out. You should replace both the impeller and seal.
  3. Could I have a problem with the drain valve?
Your dishwasher’s drain valve can get clogged and should be cleaned out if the dishwasher won’t drain. Replace the drain valve if you don’t find debris in it and the dishwasher still fails to drain.

Why won’t my dishwasher dry dishes?

  1. Is there a problem with the heating element?
Check the heating element near the bottom of the dishwasher. If the heating element might have burned out, the dishwasher won’t dry your dishes. The heating element can be replaced easily.
  2. Could there be a problem with the vent?
Your dishwasher probably has an electrically controlled vent damper that opens to let out the hot steamy air. This vent may not be operating properly and should be replaced.
