Danny’s Appliance Spring Cleaning Tips

Whether it feels like it or not, Spring is finally approaching in New England! Towards the end of Winter, we all start to get a little stir crazy, and are ready for chirping birds, fresh-smelling flowers, and to shake off the winter blues.

With this change in season comes the sudden urge to clean. When you begin your spring cleaning routine, don’t forget to clean your appliances! These machines are an essential part of your household, so it is important to keep them clean and functioning properly.

Cleaning Your Appliances- The Power of Vinegar

Stovetop

The first step is to grab your supplies! There are a variety of stovetop cleaning products you can purchase at your local grocery stores. If you don’t want to purchase these products you can use white vinegar to get the job done.

If you have coils or drip trays on your stovetop remove them and place into soapy water to soak. Use white vinegar or stovetop cleaner to scrub the surface of your stove. Only use a sponge or rag for this, as steel wool could potentially scratch your appliance. Next, scratch off any remaining gunk with a soft scrubber. Use glass cleaner to finish the job and make your stove shine!

Oven

Many ovens have a self-cleaning function, which works to eliminate the leftover food residue. However, if you do not want the smell of that or do not have this function, you can use this tactic:

The first step is to remove all trays and racks from your oven and soak them in soapy water. Use baking soda and water to create a cleaning past and spread it on the oven walls without turning your oven on. Let this sit overnight. Once complete, wipe paste off with a wet cloth and spray vinegar in corners and edges with any remaining residue. You may need to use a little elbow grease, but this will certainly do the trick!

Refrigerator

Cleaning your refrigerator can sometimes be a daunting task, however, it must be done! Start by taking all items out of the refrigerator- throwing out outdated food and putting all other food in a cooler. Remove all the shelves and drawers and wipe them down with a cleaner.

Next, spray the entire refrigerator with a cleaning product, wipe down, and rinse thoroughly. Once this is done, reinstall cleaned shelves and good food. Finish it off by putting a box of baking soda on one of your shelves to soak up food smells.

Dishwasher

Cleaning your dishwasher is relatively quick and easy. Remove any debris in your drain located at the bottom of your dishwasher. Next, place one cup of vinegar (in a container) into your dishwasher and run it for a cycle without any dishes. Once that cycle is complete, take out the container and sprinkle one cup of baking soda around the drain of your appliance. Run the baking soda on a hot speed cycle, and voila you are done!

Washing Machine

To clean your washer, simply run an empty hot cycle with two cups of vinegar inside. This eliminates a lot of the dirt and bacteria that is trapped in your machine.

Dryer

Make sure to unplug your dryer before cleaning for safety precautions. First, clean out the lint trap and wipe down the external surface of your dryer with a household cleaning product. Then, wipe down the inside of the dryer with cleaning product and water.

Now that your appliances are clean you are more than halfway through your spring cleaning checklist! You might, during this season, consider replacing your appliances to start your spring fresh.
