5 Tips to Keep Your Refrigerator Cool During the Summer

During the summer months, your refrigerator will be working hard to keep its contents cool despite the heat.

Here are 5 ways to keep your refrigerator working effectively and efficiently during the summer.

Check the Refrigerator Seal

Every refrigerator has a seal or gaskets that are designed to make the door airtight. If there are any gaps in the seal, the cooling capabilities of the fridge will be compromised.

To test to see if the seal is no longer useful, put a piece of paper between the door and the fridge, close the door, and then pull the paper. If the paper slips out easily from the door, it’s time to replace the gasket.

Check the Coils for Dust

The condenser coils located at the rear of the refrigerator, are vital to the cooling process. Over time they can be covered with dirt or dust, causing them not to work efficiently.

The dust can be removed with a vacuum attachment, or you can purchase a special coil brush.

Set the Correct Temperature

The fridge and the freezer need to be set to the correct temperature for optimal performance. This will help keep your food cooled and stored safely without breaking the bank.

Keep the refrigerator at 35 to 38 degrees, and the ideal freezer temperature is 0 to 5 degrees.

Change Out the Water Filter

If you have a water filter in your refrigerator, make sure that it’s replaced regularly. Most modern refrigerators have a filter indicator that will tell you automatically when a change is needed.

If you don’t have this feature, be sure to replace your water filter twice each year, or consult the owner’s manual.
